** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ** CRISTINA IGLESIAS
September 5 - October 3, 2008
The Donald Young Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Spanish artist Cristina Iglesias. Included in the exhibition are three large-scale silkscreens on copper. This series continues the artist's interest in creating architectural environments that offer a symbolic separation from the real world. Formed by creating ramshackle maquettes from cardboard boxes, these landscapes suggest both the cardboard cities of the homeless and the mysterious temples from some post-apocalyptic desert. Using photography more like a drawing tool, Iglesias then silk-screens the images of the structures onto copper and enlarges them to a human scale to create imaginary labyrinths. The result is a tension between the tactile and optical.
Cristina Iglesias was born in San Sebastian in November 1956 and lives and works in Madrid. She is currently working on a major urban project for the city of Toledo, Spain, sponsored by Art Angel, as well as a project for the city of Baja, California. In 2007 Iglesias completed a special commission permanently installed at the Museo Prado in Madrid, Spain. One person shows of her work have been held at numerous institutions including Museum Ludwig, Cologne, the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; Museu Serralves, Fundacao Serralves, Oporto; Carre d'art, Nimes; Palacio de Velazques, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, and the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao; the Renaissance Society, Chicago, and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven . In 1993, Iglesias represented Spain in the Spanish Pavilion of the XLV Venice Biennale.
