Reception
for the artist on Friday, September 13th, 5:00-7:30 PM
Exhibition runs September 13th thru November 9th
Donald
Young Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of DYG Projects:
Jack Sloss, Shed. This exhibition brings together two recent
installations, Shed and Session, which examine the human condition
and the collision between private and public identity.
The video installation Shed features Sloss and his wife continuously
and meticulously attempting to reenact an unsettling scene from
a movie. With each take the viewer is seduced into the human drama
of the relationship between husband and wife and the intensity of
their desire for perfection. The events are made even more disconcerting
as the couple, dressed as clowns, slowly and chillingly converge
on the camera. The projection is viewed through a large red woodshed
which contains two oversized red clown noses in which the viewer
may sit.
In Session, a beautifully crafted DJs turntable serves
as a platform in which the artist combines the audio from two individuals
experiences of a single, intimate encounter. Using two binaural
recording devices, Sloss recorded the act of a man giving
head to a woman onto clear vinyl records which spin simultaneously
on the turntables. The artwork is experienced through two sets of
headphones in which participants may listen to both the male and
female experience of this event simultaneously.
Sloss
received his BFA from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Philadelphia
in 1998 and his MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago in
2002.
The reception is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are
Tuesday thru Friday, 10:00 to 5:30 and Saturday, 11:00 to 5:30.
